On Sunday 8 November, St Hugh’s students were treated to a virtual screening of “Queen and Slim”, a 2019 American road crime drama centred on a young Black couple who go on the run after killing a police officer in self-defence during a traffic stop.
Students were invited to sign up in households to receive a ‘household pack’ containing Krispy Kremes, Cadbury hot chocolate powder, whipped cream and marshmallows. The packs were delivered in time for the film screening on Sunday. In total 25 households signed up with over 200 students watching the film at the same time, including some from abroad!
Alongside the film screening, event organiser, Nana Sarfo-Bonsu, ran a bingo competition where students had to identify 16 quotes from the movie and mark them in the bingo boxes. The first three households to cross out all the boxes in a horizontal row won Dominos pizza for their household!
Nana said, “I received so much positive feedback from every year group in the JCR, saying how much they had enjoyed the film, and how it had generated really meaningful discussions around race and the Black Lives Matter movement.”
