Burns Night is always celebrated in style at St Hugh’s, and this year was no exception. A formal dinner for College fellows, students and guests on January 24th was followed by a sell-out event on Saturday 28th, attended by College Alumni, some of whom travelled internationally to share this traditional celebration of the life and works of Rabbie Burns, the Bard of Ayrshire. We were honoured to have distinguished speakers Helena Kennedy QC, Baroness Kennedy of the Shaws, prominent barrister, broadcaster and Labour member of the House of Lords, and Kirsty Young, well-known Scottish television and radio presenter, and host to hundreds of castaways, on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs. After the ushering in of distinguished guests, and then haggis, with a traditional piper, a wonderful dinner and several entertaining speeches, the party continued with a rousing ceilidh, upstairs in Mordan Hall, where the dancing continued well into the night.
