We invite you to join us at St Hugh’s College for the Belcher Colloquium entitled, “Writing Between Empires in the Long Nineteenth Century” on Monday 20 June between 9.30am and 5.30pm.
This colloquium explores the modalities, genres, and forms used by nineteenth-century writers caught between the empires and geopolitical forces that shaped the political order of their day. In line with the recent scholarship that has examined the function of literature in a world defined by competing empires, we will consider questions such as: How do these writers make sense of their positionality? How do they write about the affective registers of compromise, adaptation, and survival? How are these issues registered formally in nineteenth-century novels, poetry, the periodical press, or other media?
