St Hugh’s bids farewell to long-serving Fellow, Tom Kuhn

Tom Kuhn, Brecht on Love and War

After over 30 years of service to St Hugh’s College, Tutorial Fellow in German, Tom Kuhn has retired, and has been elected as an Emeritus Fellow.

Tom was involved in many major projects that transformed the College: He was a member of the committee that planned and oversaw the refurbishment of the main corridor and the restructuring of the Mordan Hall and surrounding area; He was a member of the Library and Public Spaces Committee that oversaw the Library extension; and it’s to him that we owe the commissioning of the wonderful carpet in the main Library. Also, Tom took his turn as President of the SCR and was acting Vice-Principal when Josh Getzler was Acting Principal.

St Hugh’s Principal, Lady Elish Angiolini said, ‘I would like to thank Tom for his wonderful commitment to St Hugh’s over many years. His contribution has unquestionably helped to transform the College and will continue to benefit students and staff for many years to come.’

Tom said, ‘I’ve enjoyed a hugely enriching career at St Hugh’s, for which I am very grateful. I’ll miss the students and the collegiality, but I’m really looking forward to the next chapter too. As well as smaller scholarly projects, I have plans for cultural events: in the first instance I shall be co-curating an exhibition-cum-performance on Brecht’s aesthetics at Raven Row Gallery in Spitalfields, opening in early summer 2024, and I am working on another Brecht show with the saxophonist John Harle and singer Marc Almond. I hope to stay closely in touch with St Hugh’s, which has given me so much.’
