St Hugh’s student, Masahito Shinokawa (Maths and Computer Sciences, 2020) was part of a team of Oxford students who took second place in the United Kingdom and Ireland Programming Contest (UKIEPC), part of the International Collegiate Programming Contest series. Another St Hugh’s student, Hugo Dominguez Santana (Maths and Computer Sciences, 2022), picture here, also performed well at the contest, achieving seventh place with his Oxford team mates. Both Oxford teams advanced to the Northwestern European Regional Contest, to be held in the Netherlands in late November (see https://www.nwerc.eu/). They will compete for the chance to participate in the World Finals 2025. The UKIEPC took place in October with 250 teams from 29 British and Irish universities participating.
One of the Oxford Computer Science teams solved 11 out of 12 problems which scored them second place after a nail-biting finish. The team missed the top spot by a very slim margin of just three minutes. The team solved 11 problems in 960 minutes, which is a great achievement; the winning spot was taken by a team from the University of Cambridge after solving the same number of problems in just three minutes less.

The top Oxford teams will now take part in the Northwestern European Regional Contest in the Netherlands in November, where they will be fighting for a chance to participate in the World Finals in 2025.
