St Hugh’s is delighted to be co-hosting ‘Opening the PEN Archive, 1921-2021’ with TORCH (The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities) – one of a series of events marking the centenary of the world’s oldest and prominent writer’s organisation. The two-day workshop which takes place on Friday 4 February and Saturday 5 February, reflects on PEN’s role in the history of literary activism, internationalism, and human rights. Bringing together researchers and writers, archival evidence and lived experience, it aims to address a range of questions about PEN’s past, present, and future.
St Hugh’s Fellow and Professor of English and Related Literature, Peter D. McDonald will be in conversation with Noo Saro-Wiwa, travel writer and author of the critically acclaimed book: Looking for Transwonderland: Travels in Nigeria (Granta). Professor McDonald is co-author of PEN: An Illustrated History (Thames & Hudson, UK edition, 2021).
