Congratulations to five St Hugh’s ladies who have made it to the Cuppers Finals as part of Summertown Women’s Football team: Carrie O’Toole (English, 2021); Hannah Byrne (Mathematics, 2023); Beth Rawlinson (Biochemistry, 2023); goalkeeper, Letizia Bonara (Engineering, 2023); and Maggie Wilcox (History & English, 2021). Their fellow team members are students at LMH and Trinity College.
The final against Hertble Football Club (Hertford and Keble) will take place at 11.00am this Sunday 25 February at the Iffley Road Stadium. Tickets are free and can be booked by clicking here.
The team’s semi-final match was a well-fought 4-2 victory over Worcester. They started the game with only ten players and conceded a goal, but once their last player made it on to the pitch, there was no stopping them! The whole team played well from their lightning-fast forwards to their impenetrable defensive line. St Hugh’s team member, Maggie Wilcox said, ‘This has been a season full of surprises and upsets, and who knows we might just be able to pull off the biggest upset of them all at Sunday’s final!’
Oxford Cuppers is the second oldest football competition in the world (after the FA cup). It is a knock-out competition between all the Oxford colleges – taking place throughout Michaelmas and Hilary term. The term ‘Cuppers’ has been used since 1882 and comes from the word ‘cup’, and is an example of the Oxford ‘er’.
