We were thrilled to be able to welcome Professor Essaka Joshua, Associate Professor of English at the University of Notre Dame, to St Hugh’s on Thursday 3 November 2022 when she delivered our annual Lady Ademola Lecture. Professor Joshua took the following statement by Lady Ademola taken from her memoir as a guide to her fascinating talk entitled, ‘Approaching Disability and Race in British Literature 1780-1840’:
‘I was particularly struck at first by the incessant thirst of the students for information, and I still retain a very refreshing opinion I formed on my first night at St Hugh’s that the Oxford student is never satisfied until he has searched out how a thing came into being, how it is functioning and what is its future objective.‘
