Touring Music Ensemble Play in Chinese New Year

We were joined by Distinguished Friend of St Hugh’s and generous donor, Edwin Mok, and Professor Sung, Vice Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), to celebrate Chinese New Year in style. Staff, students and College members thoroughly enjoyed a concert from the Chinese Music Ensemble, on tour around the UK from CUHK. Their performance included a number of modern pieces fusing Eastern and Western influences, as well as several traditional Chinese compositions. Following the concert, we were treated to some fascinating history of the various Chinese instruments being played, and gifts were exchanged between Professor Sung and College Principal, Dame Elish Angiolini, to symbolise co-operation and shared educational ideals between St Hugh’s and CUHK. While in the UK, the Ensemble also delighted audiences in the Bodleian Library and Keble College, the British Museum, and at Cambridge University. The musical performance was followed by a sumptuous buffet-style Asian meal in the Wordsworth Tea Room, which had been specially decorated in red and gold for the occasion.
